Niagara, Ontario – Nine thousand unionized Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) employees walked off the job on Friday, closing the doors to thousands of stores across the province and launching the first-ever strike in the retailer’s history.

Stores are expected to be closed for at least 14 days.

Brock University Professor of Health Sciences Dan Malleck says although the strike itself is historic in nature, the fact that alcohol is more widely available today than in the past means store closures won’t be as “big a deal as they would have been 30 years ago, when the LCBO was the main point of access.” Continue reading →

Ontario’s new Energy Minister for the Ford government, Stephen Lecce

Ontario’s new Minister of Energy and Electrification, Stephen Lecce, recently called any opposition to fossil gas energy “ideological.”

We disagree.

Less than a decade ago, Ontario was on the path to eliminating fossil fuel generation from its electricity grid. Then the Ford government took office and immediately ripped up 758 renewable energy contracts.

Doug Ford even took a televised victory lap saying he was “so proud” to cancel contracts for wind turbines.

High temperatures can lead to heat-related illnesses and exacerbate existing health conditions, especially for people with disabilities, seniors, children, socially isolated individuals and lower-income people.

CELA is calling for provincial and municipal action to recognize the inequitable impacts of climate change and extreme heat. 

In Ontario, Bill 198, Ontario Climate Change Adaptation and Resilience Act, 2024, recently had its first reading.

Loved by many – Terry ‘Ozzie’ Nelson

John Terrance (Terry) Nelson, with the utmost respect for his daughters Jennifer and Stacia, was once a father figure to me and hundreds of others at Stamford Collegiate in Niagara Falls.

Phys-ed teacher, football coach, basketball coach, track coach… I don’t know if he ever got compensated, but I feel I owe him hundreds of tanks of gas, just dropping me at home after practice before he drove back to his wife Lynda in St. Catharines.

I spoke to him late this past June in hospital, and he was not himself, afraid that he was not in control of his health, yet readily admitting he wouldn’t be around when I returned to Canada next month. He died a few days later, at age 77, on June 23.

But we have much to learn from his life.

In February 1965, Canada’s new flag being raised in front of the Parliament building in Ottawa for the very first time.

It seems like a century ago now, but I can still remember how proud I felt when my country of Canada finally got its own flag.

Actually, it was 1965. The Beatles were cranking out one hit record after another and after years of duking it out with powerful lobby groups, our federal and provincial governments were finally  ushering in a universal health care system- something that the citizens in many countries around the world, including the United States, still don’t have and that we take for granted at our peril. Niagara, Ontario – For as many years as this veteran journalist can remember, George Bailey was the human face and voice for the Great Falls of Niagara and the scenic Parkway running along the Niagara River’s Canadian shores.

To many, he was more than just a communications director for Ontario’s Niagara Parks Commission for the many years he worked there.

He was the best tour guide a visitor to the Falls could ever have during has time at Niagara Parks in the 1980s and 90s and he was certainly a guide to many, including former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalyn, and Princess Diana and her two young sons and Princes William and Harry. Our plan includes setting a maximum allowed temperature in rental homes and long-term care homes, increasing access to cooling centres, strengthening protections for workers and making sure our downtowns have adequate tree cover.

On the eve of another summer where we once again face days and possibly weeks of record-breaking extreme heat that endangers property and our lives and all of the other  biodiversity of life that makes our planet survivable, there is a book I encourage as many of you as possible to read.

The title of the book, published this past yearearlier, is “The Heat Will Kill You First – Life and Death on a Scorched Planet” by New York Times award-winning writer Jeff Goodell.

Ottawa, Canada –We welcome the analysis released (this June 13th) from Environment and Climate Change Canada on the economic impacts of the consumer fuel charge and the industrial carbon pricing mechanism.

It shouldn’t come as any surprise that carbon pricing is projected to slightly reduce GDP in this analysis. But this analysis doesn’t provide a complete picture. WELLAND, Ontario. – On Thursday, June 13, constituents will gather at Liberal MP Vance Badawey’s riding office in Niagara Centre to demand his support for a full and immediate arms embargo on Israel.

The #ArmsEmbargoNow demand, first published on May 7th, has been endorsed by more than 400 Palestinian associations, labour unions, faith institutions, human rights and environmental organizations, and community groups across Canada.

Forty-two parliamentarians from the Liberal, NDP and Green parties have now signed-on to an abbreviated version of the statement, which acknowledges the catastrophe Israel’s ongoing assault on Gaza has caused, and calls on the Canadian government to immediately suspend all trade in arms and military technology with Israel. 

Constituents will bring a copy of the statement to the riding office for Mr. Badawey to sign; emphasizing the imminent danger to Palestinian lives in Gaza, they will encourage him not to delay a moment longer before joining his colleagues in doing the right thing.

Ontario Conservative Premier Doug Ford, who has railed against the size of government at the municipal level, sticks taxpayers with the largest cabinet in the province’s history.

This past June 6th, Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced a list of shuffled his cabinet with a number of old hands and with some new members that include Niagara West Conservative MPP Sam Oosterhoff.

Oosterhoff, who is serving his second term as (at age 27) one of the youngest, if not the youngest person in the Ontario legislature, is joining Ford’s cabinet as “Associate Minister of Energy-Intensive Industries as part of the Ministry of Energy and Electrification” – whatever in hell an associate director of electrification t means.

Perhaps Ford and Oosterhoff don’t know this but unless you are a hard-core libertarian who chooses to live in a makeshift shack out in the woods, electrification has been the status quo for virtually every home and business owner in this province for more than a hundred years.

Niagara, Ontario – Up until recently, construction of the South Niagara Hospital Project has largely taken place below ground.

That all changed this month as crews started to work on the superstructure, the part of the building that is built above the foundation level.

At its deepest point, the South Niagara Hospital basement floor is five metres below ground level. Steel piles hammered into the bedrock to support the building foundation extend an additional 18 metres below that. ST. CATHARINES, ON – Two doctors who treated patients in Gaza, including one from St. Catharines, and who are trying to go back to Gaza, will be speaking at a cultural fundraiser, hosted by the Niagara Gaza Relief Foundation of the Niagara Palestine Coalition (NPC) to help local families save their relatives in Gaza.

Dr. Saif Ullah of St. Catharines volunteered at the Gaza European Hospital in April and has been trying to return but cannot because of the Israeli invasion of Rafah. Also speaking will be Dr. Mohammad Rizwan Minhas who served in a makeshift emergency room in Gaza. Both doctors were in Gaza as part of Humanity Auxillium, a charity serving patients around the world. Continue reading →

Learn about the importance of native plants for pollinators, and how to introduce them into your garden.

Mary-Lyn is a lifelong gardener and environmentalist.  As a Master Gardener she will share her knowledge of science based gardening and the use of native plants in urban settings. 

Six years ago she moved into a house with few gardens and has transformed that landscape with both native and non-invasive trees and perennials, having added more that 100 varieties of native plants. Through the process she has acquired a broad understanding of the rewards and challenges of adding native plants to home landscapes.

This May 15th, 2024, the Ford Government passed its Protecting Enbridge Gas Profits Act. Sorry, in official government doublespeak, that’s the Keeping Energy Costs Down Act aka Bill 165.

Of course, in stark contrast to its name, this new law will raise energy costs by ensuring that all gas consumers will pay for expanding the Enbridge Gas distribution system. Reinstating this subsidy for new methane gas hookups for developers will cost over $1 billion over the next 4 years alone. Continue reading →
