A Happy Independence Day To All Our American Neighbours and Friends

Let’s Hope, for the Sake of Them, for the Sake of Canadians and for the Sake of People Around the World, That it Won’t Be the Last Happy One

A Brief Message from Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug Draper

Posted July 4th, 2024 on Niagara At Large

Here is to a happy and peaceful Fourth of July to all of our American neighbours and friends, including all of those who have continued to visit Niagara At Large and provide us with news and their views over the years.

I continue to be humbled by the number of readers we have in the Buffalo, N.Y. area and other parts of the United States.

These days, I also join many of you and many of my fellow Canadians in sharing concern and fear over what might happen to your democracy and to your relationship with long-time friends and allies like Canada if Donald Trump wins another term as president.

No Mr. Energy Minister, Opposing Gas Plants In Ontario Isn’t “Ideological”

A fossil fuel-free Ontario is entirely possible, despite what the Ford government has been saying

A Message from Ontario’s Green Party

Posted July 2nd, 2024 on Niagara At Large

Ontario’s new Energy Minister for the Ford government, Stephen Lecce

Ontario’s new Minister of Energy and Electrification, Stephen Lecce, recently called any opposition to fossil gas energy “ideological.”

We disagree.

Less than a decade ago, Ontario was on the path to eliminating fossil fuel generation from its electricity grid. Then the Ford government took office and immediately ripped up 758 renewable energy contracts.

Doug Ford even took a televised victory lap saying he was “so proud” to cancel contracts for wind turbines.

Now that sure sounds “ideological.” Continue reading

So Long to a Beloved Teacher, Sports Coach, Mentor and Friend to Generations of Niagara Students

A Remembrance from a former student, John Nicol

Posted July 2nd, 2024 on Niagara At Large

Loved by many – Terry ‘Ozzie’ Nelson

John Terrance (Terry) Nelson, with the utmost respect for his daughters Jennifer and Stacia, was once a father figure to me and hundreds of others at Stamford Collegiate in Niagara Falls.

Phys-ed teacher, football coach, basketball coach, track coach… I don’t know if he ever got compensated, but I feel I owe him hundreds of tanks of gas, just dropping me at home after practice before he drove back to his wife Lynda in St. Catharines.

I spoke to him late this past June in hospital, and he was not himself, afraid that he was not in control of his health, yet readily admitting he wouldn’t be around when I returned to Canada next month. He died a few days later, at age 77, on June 23.

But we have much to learn from his life.

A Song For the Sharing on Canada Day

A Song and Video for Living in Harmony with the Life Around Us

Some Introductory Comments by Doug Draper at Niagara At Large

Posted June 30th/July 1st, 2024

On this Canada Day weekend, when we all want to get away from the news and spend some time good time together with our families, friends and others in our communities, I only want to share with you one song and video.

The first big hit-making lineup of The Guess Who, from left, Garry Peterson, Randy Bachman, Burton Cummings and Jim Kale

The song is by one of Canada’s best all-time bands, the Guess Who, and the video that goes with it was produced by Greenpeace and is a moving look at some of the natural grandeur around it and the tragedy of losing more of it if we collectively, as a species, go on with business as usual and don’t do everything in our capacity to find more harmonious ways of living with it. No More Canadian Flags on Canada Day For Me – At Least For A While

I Will Be Flying the Earth Flag Instead

A Commentary for Canada Day Weekend by Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug Draper

Posted June 28th, 2024 on Niagara At Large

In February 1965, Canada’s new flag being raised in front of the Parliament building in Ottawa for the very first time.

It seems like a century ago now, but I can still remember how proud I felt when my country of Canada finally got its own flag.

Actually, it was 1965. The Beatles were cranking out one hit record after another and after years of duking it out with powerful lobby groups, our federal and provincial governments were finally  ushering in a universal health care system- something that the citizens in many countries around the world, including the United States, still don’t have and that we take for granted at our peril. Debate Shows That Biden, As Well As Trump, Spell ‘Deep Trouble’ For America, And The World

‘Biden proved himself no longer able to manage the challenge of being president. He failed to show himself up to the intellectual task.’

A Commentary by Niagara resident and writer Gary Screaton Page

Both Trump (right) and Biden give the world something to very much worry about.

The word that best describes the US presidential debate Thursday night, June 27, 2024, is “tragic!”

Neither candidate shone. In fact, both were disasters, not just for their respective parties but, tragically. for America, and for the world.

Biden and Trump were the authors of their own undoing. America is in deep trouble! Continue reading

His Passion For the Great Falls of Niagara and Niagara River Parkway Was Unmatched – Goodbye George Bailey

A Brief Remembrance from Doug Draper, Niagara At Large

One of Niagara Falls’ most passionate voices, George Bailey

Niagara, Ontario – For as many years as this veteran journalist can remember, George Bailey was the human face and voice for the Great Falls of Niagara and the scenic Parkway running along the Niagara River’s Canadian shores.

To many, he was more than just a communications director for Ontario’s Niagara Parks Commission for the many years he worked there.

He was the best tour guide a visitor to the Falls could ever have during has time at Niagara Parks in the 1980s and 90s and he was certainly a guide to many, including former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalyn, and Princess Diana and her two young sons and Princes William and Harry. “The Heat Will Kill You First” – A Book for Our Dangerously Hot Times

Toward a Just and Lasting Peace in Ukraine

“Canada and our international partners are united in our support of a just and lasting peace for Ukraine. To the Ukrainians who continue to stand strong in defence of their homeland, know that we will keep supporting you until victory.” – Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada

A News Release from the Office of Canada’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau

Posted June 16th, 2024 on Niagara At Large

Lucerne, Switzerland – When Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, it unleashed an attack on democracy, freedom, and the rules-based international order.

Despite Russia’s relentless war of aggression, Ukrainians are standing strong, and Canada and our international partners proudly stand with them in defence of their homeland. Ukraine’s fight is a fight for international law, for the United Nations Charter, and for innocent civilians, including children, who deserve to live in peace.

At the G7 Leaders’ Summit in Apulia, Italy, earlier this week, Prime Minister Trudeau announced key measures to impose costs on Russia for its illegal and unjustifiable war against Ukraine.

Canada is sanctioning individuals and entities related to Russia’s military-industrial complex as well as those involved in sanctions circumvention and propaganda operations.

We are contributing $5 billion to G7 Extraordinary Revenue Acceleration Loans for Ukraine, which aims to bring forward future revenues from frozen Russian sovereign assets, to provide Ukraine with approximately $69 billion (US$50 billion) as it continues to defend its freedom, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

Environmental Defence Welcomes Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Analysis on the Economic Impacts of Carbon Pricing

“If critics (like Canada’s Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre)  want to complain about the costs of any of the (climate) policies in place or those in development, they should be transparent about what they would do instead.”

A Statement by Aly Hyder Ali, Oil and Gas Program Manager for the Canada-wide citizens organization, Environmental Defence

Ottawa, Canada –We welcome the analysis released (this June 13th) from Environment and Climate Change Canada on the economic impacts of the consumer fuel charge and the industrial carbon pricing mechanism.

It shouldn’t come as any surprise that carbon pricing is projected to slightly reduce GDP in this analysis. But this analysis doesn’t provide a complete picture. It doesn’t compare the economic impacts of carbon pricing versus other policies, nor does it compare it to the costs of inaction, that is, doing nothing about climate change.

Climate change is here, now, and people across the country are facing its disastrous impacts from raging wildfires to droughts and floods.

Niagara West MPP Sam Oosterhoff Joins Most Bloated Cabinet in Ontario History

Apparently Doug Ford’s Call To Niagara and other Municipalities Across Province to Reduce Size of Their Governments Doesn’t Apply to Him and His Cabinet

A News Commentary by Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug Draper

Posted June 10th, 2024 on Niagara At Large

Ontario Conservative Premier Doug Ford, who has railed against the size of government at the municipal level, sticks taxpayers with the largest cabinet in the province’s history.

This past June 6th, Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced a list of shuffled his cabinet with a number of old hands and with some new members that include Niagara West Conservative MPP Sam Oosterhoff.

Oosterhoff, who is serving his second term as (at age 27) one of the youngest, if not the youngest person in the Ontario legislature, is joining Ford’s cabinet as “Associate Minister of Energy-Intensive Industries as part of the Ministry of Energy and Electrification” – whatever in hell an associate director of electrification t means.

Perhaps Ford and Oosterhoff don’t know this but unless you are a hard-core libertarian who chooses to live in a makeshift shack out in the woods, electrification has been the status quo for virtually every home and business owner in this province for more than a hundred years.

On a more serious note, I will tell you what electrifies me.

“While food banks are on the brink of collapse and cannot keep pace with the growing need in our communities, this (Ford) government is handing over billion dollars to corporations in order to put beer in corner stores one year earlier than it was already scheduled to happen. … What a cruel and twisted sense of priorities”                                               – Jeff Burch, Niagara Centre MPP

Mr. Jeff Burch: “I received a letter this month from Bart Coleman, Pastor of St. Matthew’s Lutheran in Welland, and First Lutheran in Port Colborne, highlighting the staggering number of people using food banks in Niagara.

“They wanted to know what the (Ontario) government (of Premier Doug Ford) was doing to address this crisis. I had no answer for them. Food banks receive very little government support. They depend on charity and are barely hanging on these days. Continue reading

IT’S OFFICIAL – TRUMP IS NOW A CONVICTED CRIMINAL!

Trump is now the first former President in U.S. history to be tried and found guilty of crimes against the people in a court of law

A Brief News Comment by Doug Draper, Niagara At Large

Posted May 30th, 2024

This date – May 30th, 2024 – will go down in history.

It is sure to be remembered by all people of sound mind – by people who do not live in Trump’s cultish alternative universe – as a day when justice prevailed for our friends and neighbours in the United States over rancid acts of corruption aimed at strike blows against that country’s system of democracy.

At or around 5 P.M. on this date a juror of 12 U.S. citizens walked into a courtroom in New York City after hearing more than four weeks of testimony and found Donald Trump guilty on all 34 counts of committing acts aimed at buying him victory in the 2016 presidential election. Continue reading

The Fightback For Public Health Care In Ontario Is On …

“If we do nothing, we accept that our society will suffer the extremes of wealth and poverty, the final destruction of the middle class and ever-increasing inequity. We accept that more people will suffer and die without needed care, or lose their livelihoods to pay for medical bills, and to add insult to injury, we will pay for _more_ for less, just as they do in the U.S. and other systems of private health care. Everyone deserves a fair, healthy future. But today, for many Canadians, our provincial and territorial health care systems are under strain.

One of the biggest pressures right now is affordable medication. The medications many Canadians need are often too expensive, leading to fewer visits to pharmacies, less treatment, and more frequent health scares. The cost of contraceptives, and medications for those who are diabetic, is one of the largest barriers to access.

We’re making sure Canadians get the medication that they need, when they need it. Continue reading

The Ontario Ford Government’s Anti-Density Bill 185 is so Extreme and Corrupt that even Density Opponents are Concerned

Statement from Phil Pothen, Land Use and Land Development program manager for Environmental Defence

Posted May 22nd, 2024 on Niagara At Large

Toronto– The Ontario government’s latest attempt to kneecap efforts to build more homes in neighbourhoods  – and supercharge suburban sprawl – is so extreme that even some long-time opponents of density are joining the opposition.

It should be no surprise to anyone that environmental NGOs (non-profit, non-government organizations) , farming organizations and housing supply advocates are united in opposition to Bill 185 and the new Provincial Planning Statement.

These new laws are intended to kill Ontario’s “smart growth” city planning system, abandoning efforts to make towns and cities build housing within existing built up areas and protect non-Greenbelt farmland and wildlife habitat from suburban sprawl.  Continue reading

Ford Government steps up for Enbridge Gas and its Subdivision Developer Friends – Again

Gas consumers will not benefit from Doug Ford’s ‘Keeping Energy Costs Down Act.’ Enbridge Gas and subdivision developers will.

A News Release from the Ontario Clean Air Alliance – a citizen’s advocate for a healthier environment

This May 15th, 2024, the Ford Government passed its Protecting Enbridge Gas Profits Act. Sorry, in official government doublespeak, that’s the Keeping Energy Costs Down Act aka Bill 165.

Of course, in stark contrast to its name, this new law will raise energy costs by ensuring that all gas consumers will pay for expanding the Enbridge Gas distribution system. Reinstating this subsidy for new methane gas hookups for developers will cost over $1 billion over the next 4 years alone. Continue reading

In Doug Ford’s Ontario, Farmland Is Under Attack Everywhere – And It Has To Stop

“After being forced to walk back his Greenbelt plan, Ford continues to seek out new ways to impose expensive sprawl development where it doesn’t belong in communities that don’t want it”.

From the Green Party of Ontario

Posted May 16th, 2024 on Niagara At Large

Every day, Ontario loses 319 acres of farmland to urban sprawl and other uses.

With less than five percent of the province classified as prime agricultural land, you’d think that losing the equivalent of 365 family farms a year would be cause for alarm.

You’d think that your provincial government would be taking urgent action to protect the farmland we have left. Continue reading

Toronto, Ontario – Bill 165, the so-called Keeping Energy Costs Down Act, is an affront to good governance and an insult to Ontarians who are grappling with an affordability crisis.

Contrary to the Bill’s ironic name, this piece of legislation will raise energy costs for nearly 4 million households in Ontario and saddle new home buyers with higher energy costs by making gas heating the default, instead of nudging home builders to install highly efficient heat pumps.

The move to overrule the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) and concentrate decision making power in the hands of the Minister is irresponsible and could have far-reaching consequences, leading to significant costs, all of which will be borne by Ontarians.
