Niagara Region Is Thinking Clean & Green As It Celebrates Earth And Compost Awareness Weeks

Niagara, Ontario – Niagara Region is celebrating the arrival of spring with a series of environmental events in April and May, including Earth Week activities (April 17-25) and Spring Compost Events (May 4-9 and May 30). These events provide residents with opportunities to reduce waste, support community organizations and learn more about Regional programs.

Earth Week (April 17–25)

Earth Week begins with the Earth Week Drop-off Contest from April 18-25 at all Regional Drop-off Depots. Residents are encouraged to bring acceptable housewares, textiles and used batteries for proper recycling or reuse. Each eligible item earns one ballot for a chance to win an Earth Week prize pack, including a $50 Visa gift card. Throughout Earth Week, Niagara Region staff will be at several community events to answer questions about waste programs and services. At select locations, residents can purchase Green Bins ($19) and Kitchen Catchers ($4); only cash will be accepted.
Regional staff will be present at the following events (container sales will be available at all locations except at the St. Catharines Farmers Market):

• , April 17 (2 – 7 p.m.) and April 18 – 19 (11 a.m. – 5 p.m.): Niagara Home & Garden Show, Canada Games Park
• , April 18 (8 a.m. – 12 p.m.): Earth Day Extravaganza, Welland Farmers Market
• , April 22 (10 a.m. – 3 p.m.): Links for Greener Learning Earth Day event, St. Catharines Farmers Market
• , April 25 (11 a.m. – 3 p.m.): Thorold Earth Day Event, Canada Games Park

Spring Compost Events (May 4–9 and May 30)

Niagara Region’s annual Spring Compost Events will take place May 4-9 at Regional landfill sites. While quantities last, residents may receive up to three 20‑litre bags of compost per household in exchange for a cash donation or non‑perishable food donation, with all contributions benefiting local community organizations.

Compost will be available at:

• Bridge Street Waste and Recycling Drop-Off Depot, 1300 Bridge St., Fort Erie: Mon. – Fri., 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sat., 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.
• Humberstone Landfill, 700 Humberstone Rd., Welland: Mon. – Fri., 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sat., 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.
• Niagara Road 12 Landfill, 7015 Concession Rd. 7, West Lincoln: Tue. – Fri., 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sat., 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

A final compost event will be held on May 30 in partnership with the City of Niagara Falls during its annual tree giveaway. This event will take place behind the MacBain Community Centre (off Montrose Rd. on Kinsmen Ct.). Compost at this event will be available in loose form. Residents must bring their own containers and be prepared to load compost themselves. Quantities are available while supplies last.

Donations collected through these events will support local organizations, including Fort Erie COPE, West Lincoln Community Care, The Salvation Army Thrift Store, The HOPE Centre / Goodwill Niagara and Project Share Niagara Falls.

These initiatives help raise awareness about the importance of participating in diversion programs, like the Region’s Green Bin program. Serving approximately 480,000 residents and businesses across 12 municipalities, Niagara Region manages about 190,000 tonnes of waste each year. Curbside diversion programs, along with materials accepted at Regional Drop-Off Depots and Reuse Centres, play a vital role in keeping waste out of landfill, benefitting communities across the region.
