Governance Changes Should Be Decided by Niagarans, Not Imposed From Above – St. Catharines City Councillors

A Message of Concern To All Of Us in Niagara from  St. Catharines City Councillors Greg Miller and Caleb Ratzlaff

(A Brief Foreword Note from Doug Draper At Niagara At Large – I urge everyone in Niagara to read this and share it with everyone they know. This is all about standing up for our democratic right to decide our  future and the future of our children and grandchildren here. And cheers to these two municipal councillors. We need many more like them across our Niagara region and let’s all work together to vote more like them into office in this coming Fall’s municipal elections.)

St. Catharines, Ontario – St. Catharines City Councillors Greg Miller and Caleb Ratzlaff are raising serious concerns about the push toward municipal restructuring in Niagara, calling the current approach “undemocratic, unsupported by evidence, and disconnected from the will of residents.”

“We have read the recent letter sent to (Ontario) Premier Ford signed by (St. Catharines) Mayor Siscoe, and disagree with its notion of a shared vision for governance changes. There has been no community-wide endorsement of any vision, let alone something as drastic as removing Regional Councillors.

“We are concerned about why any changes would be rushed through ahead of the October municipal elections. Endorsing major governance changes without public approval ignores the fundamental responsibility of elected officials: to represent the people who elected them.

St. Catharines City Councillor Caleb Ratzlaff

“Our job is not to fall in line behind Doug Ford or repeat his talking points. Our job is to stand up for our residents by demanding evidence, asking difficult questions, and ensuring their voices are heard. If there is a case for change, then make it openly, honestly, and with evidence.

“Lay out the options, the costs, and the consequences. And then let the people decide directly.

“Niagara does not belong to Queen’s Park, and it does not belong to a handful of elected officials.

“It belongs to the people who live here.”

A Footnote from Doug Draper at Niagara At Large – I have just learned from St. Catharines City Councillor Greg Miller that his colleague, St. Catharines City Councillor Bruce Williamson, has endorsed the statement posted above too. A high five to Bruce.
