A Brief Tribute Posted on Niagara At Large by Doug Draper
March 30th, 2026

A 1997 self-portrait of Joni Mitchell with one of her beloved cats.
If you missed it, one of the highlights of this March 29th Juno Award Ceremonies, hosted this year in Hamilton, Ontario, was the so well-deserved Lifetime Achievement Award presented to one of Canada’s greatest, Joni Mitchell, by Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Now 82, this amazing musician who is equally amazing at picking up a brush and blowing us away with what she can produce on a canvas, began accompanying herself on guitar in coffee houses and at folk festivals back in the early to mid-1960s, and her evolution as an artist – from songs like ‘Both Sides Now’ and ‘Big Yellow Taxi’ to recordings of beautifully crafted lyrics and music with some of the world’s greatest jazz players – has captivated one generation after another ever since.
So here is Joni Mitchell receiving her Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 Junos. To watch it, click on the screen immediately below –
Finally, here is a video you can click on to watch her performing ‘Big Yellow Taxi’ back in the year of Woodstock, 1969 –
The Very Best To You Joni & Here’s Hoping You Are Still With Us At 102.
