David Suzuki at 90
Those of you who are regular followers of Niagara At Large on our official website at www.niagaraatlarge.com or on our Facebook page at (20+) Facebook know that I have spent a great deal of time banging the drums over the years for the urgent need for all of us, in concert with our governments at all levels, to address what scientists around the world are calling a “climate emergency” before it is too late.
From time to time, it seemed that some real momentum was growing, as was the case in 2019 when an estimated 500,000 people joined then 16-year-old Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg in Montreal, Quebec in one of the largest rallies for anything in Canadian history for climate action.
Shortly after that rally the COVID-19 pandemic came along and put a damper on all of that, and more recently Trump returned to the Oval Office and took an axe to all of the climate measures in the U.S., and now we have this un-called for war Trump and his pal in Israel launched against Iran, which has taken us off track even more.
All of this leaves people like me, and who knows how many others, wondering if continuing to bang those drums for climate action isn’t just a waste of whatever timewe have left on this earth. Sometimes I think I might be better off spending that time petting my cats and playing my guitar.
But at the end of the day, it always comes back to my daughter and her peers and their future, and I tell myself that for their sake, I can’t give up. I have got to keep fighting.
In a very recent interview CBC Radio did with iconic Canadian scientist and environmentalist David Suzuki, aired on the eve of his 90th birthday, which is this March 23rd, 2026, it gave me little comfort to learn that he more or less feels the same way.
It is a moving interview and I urge you to listen to it and share it with as many people as you know. You can hear it now by clicking on the following link –https://www.cbc.ca/radio/sunday/david-suzuki-memoir-life-birthday-climate-change-9.7136044
The very best to you on your 90th Birthday, David Suzuki, from Doug Draper
“Indigenous people tell us all the time the Earth is our mother. She gives birth to us. She nurtures us. She has got to be our highest priority,” Suzuki said, adding that climate change should be a larger priority than creating jobs.
