“Our communities deserve a say in how our schools are run.”
A Message from the Green Party Of Ontario
Posted March 6th, 2026 on Niagara At Large
Ontario’s schools have been struggling for years, with overcrowded classrooms and crumbling buildings. But now, the province is moving to take away our communities’ ability to do anything about it.
Last November, the Ford government passed Bill 33, stripping power from locally elected school trustees and handing it to a minister in downtown Toronto. This is a direct attack on local democracy.
By centralizing control, the government is silencing the local voices—parents, teachers, and education workers—who know our students best.
The government claims these changes will help families, but this is about removing local oversight and reallocating resources away from the classroom. We’ve seen this playbook before in the 1990s, and it led to years of gutted services and school closures.
While the province seizes control, our schools remain in crisis:
- – Nearly 40% of schools are falling apart.
- – Chronic underfunding has led to a severe lack of EAs and support staff, meaning many students with special needs are being shut out of the classroom.
- – School boards are being forced to manage daily teacher shortages without the autonomy to address local needs.
Our communities deserve a say in how our schools are run. Decisions about a school board in London or Thunder Bay (or Niagara) should not be at the whim of a minister in Toronto.
