Port Colborne Mayor Expresses Concern Over Gale’s Handling Of Municipal Amalgamation Pitch

“Decisions that could fundamentally reshape how our communities are governed should not be advanced without careful analysis and open dialogue, and in consultation.”

A Message From Port Colborne Mayor Bill Steele

City of Port Colborne in Niagara, Ontario – I want to acknowledge the recent discussions regarding potential changes to municipal governance in Niagara.

I am disappointed in how this matter has come forward (from Niagara Regional Chair Bob Gale), as conversations of this magnitude require a thoughtful, transparent process supported by meaningful consultation with municipalities, residents, and community partners.

Decisions that could fundamentally reshape how our communities are governed should not be advanced without careful analysis and open dialogue, and in consultation with the established Council at the Niagara Region.

At the same time, I do believe there is merit in reviewing aspects of governance to address some of the issues that have been identified, particularly at the upper-tier level. Municipalities across Niagara continue to face challenges related to the delivery and cost of major infrastructure, including water, wastewater, and regional roads

We have seen firsthand how duplication and complexity can contribute to higher costs for taxpayers, and I support efforts to examine how we can improve coordination, increase efficiency, and control costs for taxpayers.
