A News Release from the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority
Posted February 6th, 2026 on Niagara At Large
Did you know that the Niagara River is a critical overwintering spot for 92 species of birds?!
The Niagara River remains unfrozen throughout the winter months, making it an essential food source for many migratory birds. Several species can be found along the Niagara River in globally significant numbers, such as Herring Gulls, Bonaparte’s gulls and Greater Scaups.
Celebrate the vast diversity of birds that visit the Niagara River at the Birds on the Niagara (BON) 2026! Birds on the Niagara is an international winter celebration promoting the intersections between winter birds, conservation and social justice.
A series of indoor and outdoor events are happening from February 12-16, 2026, on both the American and Canadian sides of the Niagara River.
On Family Day, February 16, there will be a Birding Open House hosted by Niagara Parks at the Nature Glen Centre from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm.
This event is in collaboration with Birds on the Niagara, and will feature bird identification workshops and presentations from local birding experts, as well as guided birding walks. Admission is free!
