On Wednesday January 21st  at 7:00 p.m. , the Niagara District Council of Women  is holding a public   zoom meeting regarding   the Provincial Government’s  Privatization of Health Care and its impact on hospitals, public health services and primary care   in Niagara, Ontario  and elsewhere in Canada.

Our featured speaker Natalie  Mehra, Executive Director of the Ontario Health Coalition  heads up a fast -growing  number of Ontarians  who are rallying, educating and working hard to save these vital public services and counter the Provincial government’s support of privatization.

Niagara Region advocates are keenly aware of the truth in her  key message and the facts behind  it. As  Natalie noted recently  ” the Ford government’s underfunding left the hospitals with a large deficit — $25 million in 2025.

While the hospital has operating rooms that are closed the majority of the time due to underfunding, Ford has shifted hundreds of millions of dollars to private for-profit clinics.

Not only has this left patients waiting for care and worsened the hospital overcrowding, while depriving it of needed resources to provide care, it has forced patients to travel and use private clinics that cost more and charge patients hundreds or even thousands of dollars in user fees. This is just one of the terrible local impacts of Ford’s health care policies.”

Further to this,  in a recent note to the Ontario Health  Coalition’s members ,  Ms. Mehra  noted that “The new law in Alberta creates the legal framework to privatize health care, ending single-tier Public Medicare, enabling doctors to charge patients directly for health care and bill the public system at the same time.

Without question, this law breaches the Canada Health Act and attempts to splinter our deep national consensus that the fundamental principle that Canadian health care be equal access for all, based on need not wealth, and provided for the public good not for the purpose of profit taking from the ill.”
