A Belated Tribute To Musician Extraordinaire Rick Derringer by Doug Draper
Posted December 2025 on Niagara At Large

Rick Derringer of McCoys/Edgar Winter Band fame.
Those of you who have been following Niagara At Large for any real length of time now know that one of my biggest loves in life is music and so many of the great people out there who have done a top job of making it.
In that spirit, I want to end the year by confessing that I missed hearing the news this past spring of 2025 that Rick Derringer died so I can’t help making up for it here with a couple of videos that at least some of you may enjoy.
Who is Rick Derringer, some of you may ask?
Rick Derringer was the lead singer and guitarist for a rock group called The McCoys that had big hits in 1965 and 1966 with songs like ‘Hang On Sloopy’, ‘ Fever’ and ‘Come On, Let’s Go’, and who went on in the late 60s and early 1970s to perform with The Edgar Winter Band on equally big hits like ‘Frankenstein’ and ‘Free Ride’
If you care to hear just a few minutes of Rick Derringer, here he is, first performing on a dance band band television show in 1965 with The McCoys on the just released ‘Hang On Sloopy’. To hear it, click on the screen immediately below –
Now here he is again, years later, performing the same song live –
