A Statement from Regional Chair Bob Gale on the resolution of the police incident in Welland

(A Brief Foreword from Doug Draper at Niagara At Large – The following statement was issued in the wake of the arrest of one suspect in the shooting of a Niagara Regional Police officer, now recovering in hospital from a non-life threatening chest would) after a standoff with police in the Lincoln Street/Plymouth Road area of Welland that had businesses closed and residents, schools and the Welland Hospital locked down for a period of about 24 hours beginning this past Friday.)

Regional Chair Gale provided the following statement regarding the resolution of the active shooter situation which was resolved this morning (Saturday, December 20th, 2025:
“On behalf of Regional Council, I would like to personally thank and commend the Niagara Regional Police Service, Niagara EMS, and Welland Fire for their exceptional work in responding to this challenging situation and keeping our community safe.
Their prompt and professional response, open communication, and collaboration with Niagara Region, the City of Welland and other agencies meant that this situation was resolved in a way that protected that the safety and wellbeing of our community.
I would also like to recognize our Regional staff who supported our first responders and protected the safety of the residents in our care at Regional facilities in the area.”
