Niagara Falls Riding MPP Wayne Gates
QUEEN’S PARK – MPP Wayne Gates (Niagara Falls) is urging the Ford government to review the housing provisions of Bill 60, as the Ontario NDP move a motion to protect seniors, retirees, and young families from fast-tracked evictions and higher rents.
“Retirees in Niagara are already struggling to stretch their pensions, and young families are trying to save for their first home,” said Gates. “The cost of living has never been higher and the last thing families need is a bill that helps corporations and wealthy investors squeeze more profit, faster, out of Niagara’s residents.”
The NDP motion comes directly as the Ford government moves to ram Bill 60 through the Legislature while cutting off meaningful debate, despite a plethora of concerns raised by tenants, housing advocates, and everyday Ontarians.
“We’ve all heard of the billions being spent by big corporations to buy up homes in Niagara, and we’ve all seen the cost of seniors being aggressively renovicted,” said Gates. “Let’s be clear, this bill doesn’t help a single family in Niagara. We should be passing bills that build affordable housing, not ones that help deep-pocketed corporations’ profit faster on it – ignoring the real problem of an over-worked and underfunded landlord tenant board is a disgrace,” said Gates.
The Ontario NDP’s motion calls on the government to remove the harmful housing sections from Bill 60 and take real action to make homes affordable, including restoring real rent control and cracking down on bad-faith evictions.
Stiles, NDP bring motion to repeal Bill 60 and ensure fairness at the LTB

Ontario NDP Official Opposition Leader Marit Stiles
QUEEN’S PARK — Marit Stiles, Leader of Ontario’s Official Opposition, has introduced an opposition motion calling on Doug Ford to protect Ontario’s renters. The Opposition Day motion calls for fairness in the Landlord Tenant Board to stop unfair evictions and above-guideline rent hikes. It also calls on the Ford government to repeal Bill 60.
“This is about making life more affordable for Ontarians,” said Stiles. “Ontario is facing a jobs disaster, but Doug Ford is more focused on attacking renters and making housing even more expensive.”
“Ontario is dead last nationally in home-building,” said Shadow Housing Minister Catherine McKenney. “Why is the Premier trying to kick people out of their homes, instead of rapidly building affordable new ones? Instead of listening to people, Doug Ford shut down debate and rammed through Bill 60. We are bringing a motion to force a debate, because the people deserve to have their voices heard.”
“The people will not be silenced,” added Stiles. “We’ve seen Ontarians across the province use their voices and organize against Bill 60. With our motion, we will keep up the pressure and tell Doug Ford; repeal Bill 60, bring in real rent control, end bad faith evictions, and build affordable housing.”
