QUEENS PARK — Niagara Falls NDP MPP Wayne Gates (Niagara Falls) rose in the Ontario Legislature today (this November 5th, 2025) to commemorate and honour the Niagara Region and Fort Erie resident Burdett (Burd) Sisler, who has become the oldest living person in Canada at 110 years old:

“I wanted to share a special congratulations today. Recently, after the sad news of the passing of Margaret Romans, one of my constituents, Mr. Burdett Sisler of Fort Erie, became the oldest living person in Canada. But Burdett — or Burd, as we call him — is a truly incredible and special person.

Burd, who is 110 years young, is a veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces, having served our country during the Second World War. He is the oldest living Canadian veteran of the war and is believed to be the sixth oldest living veteran in the world. Burd spent 30 years working for the Canada Border Services Agency and raised a family right here in Fort Erie. He now lives at Garrison Place and has five children, 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

I have been extremely privileged to call Burd a close friend. In fact, Burd nominated me to run for re-election as MPP in the last two provincial elections.

I was also proud to attend Burd’s 110th birthday celebration this April at Royal Canadian Legion Branch 71 in Fort Erie, where I had the honour of presenting him with the King Charles Coronation Medal. Congratulations, Burd — and thank you for your incredible service to our country, for all you have given to our community in Niagara, and for your friendship.”

Previously recognized as Canada’s oldest living man and veteran, Burd is now the oldest living person in Canada, according to the Gerontology Research Group’s world rankings.
