Niagara Falls NDP MPP Wayne Gates Leads Cross-Party Push For OHIP-Covered Prostate Cancer Testing

“On behalf of the Prostate Cancer Foundation Canada, our Board of Directors, and our Medical and Scientific Councils, we are proud to endorse this important motion calling for OHIP coverage of PSA testing. Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Canadian men, and early detection through PSA testing can make the difference between life and death.”                                                                                                            – Mark Mahl, Executive Director of the Prostate Cancer Foundation Canada

QUEEN’S PARK, Ontario —NDP MPP Wayne Gates (Niagara Falls) is leading the call to make PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) testing free under OHIP, a measure that could save lives through early detection of prostate cancer.

At this morning’s press conference at Queen’s Park, Gates was joined by Independent MPP Bobbi Ann Brady, Green Party Leader Mike Schreiner, representatives from the Canadian Cancer Society, Prostate Cancer Foundation Canada, and Dave Flus, President of the Niagara Prostate Group, in urging the Ford government to eliminate cost barriers to this simple, potentially lifesaving test.

“This isn’t about politics. It’s about saving lives,” said Gates. “Every year, thousands of men are diagnosed too late because of the cost barrier to early testing. This is preventable. I’m calling on, and have been calling on, every member of the Legislature to support this motion and make PSA testing free for all Ontarians.”

Gates noted that prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Canadian men and said that Ontario has the opportunity to lead with compassion and common sense.

“Let’s make this the year we get it done together,” said Gates.

Quotes:

“As MPP Gates has emphasized, 1 in 8 men in Canada will be diagnosed with prostate cancer over the course of their lifetime and sadly, many lose their lives. It’s proven that when prostate cancer is detected early, nearly 100 per cent of men with the disease will survive five years or more. Being an Independent MPP, I have the ability to support smart strategies across party lines. Mr. Gates’ idea is a great one. For over two years, I’ve been calling on this government to cover this test — so far, there’s been no action. I hope they’ll listen this time.”Bobbi Ann Brady, Independent MPP for Haldimand-Norfolk

“On behalf of the Prostate Cancer Foundation Canada, our Board of Directors, and our Medical and Scientific Councils, we are proud to endorse this important motion calling for OHIP coverage of PSA testing. Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Canadian men, and early detection through PSA testing can make the difference between life and death. No one should face financial barriers to a simple test that can save lives. We commend the leadership shown in bringing this motion forward and urge all Members of Provincial Parliament to support it.” Mark Mahl, Executive Director of the Prostate Cancer Foundation Canada
