A Brief News Commentary & Tribute by Doug Draper, an unabashed Diane Keaton Fan

Diane Keaton in Annie Hall, as many might remember her.

I wasn’t going to post anything this weekend above and beyond my Happy Thanksgiving wishes to you that you can scroll down to just before this one, but I can’t help putting on just a little something about this shocking news.

I say shocking because, even though she was 79, Diane Keaton still had a youthful look and energy about her, so much so that I can’t help but think that she may have been one of the people Bob Dylan had in mind when he wrote the song ’Forever Young’.

In the epic 1972 film, The Godfather, with Al Pacino.

From her start in show business as a very young actress in the first Broadway stage production of the 1960s counter-culture musical ‘Hair’, to her string of lead roles in Woody Allen comedies like ‘Manhattan’, 1977’s ‘Annie Hall’, which won her an Academy Award for best actress, and ‘Play It Again Sam’, to more dramatic roles in blockbuster films like ‘Reds’ with Warren Beatty and ‘Godfather I’ and ‘Godfather II’ with Al Pacino, and onwrd to more recent roles in ‘Book Club’ and 2024’s ‘Arthur’s Whiskey’ and ‘Summer Camp’, she has always been part of the lives of those of us who enjoyed following her gifted career.

And now, just like that and while many of us, including this long-time fan, are still coming to terms with the recent death of another film legend, Robert Redford, she is gone.

I am sure that there are many of you out there who have your own favourite Diane Keaton movies. I know that for starters, I will find my copy of ‘Annie Hall’ sometime over the next 24 hours and put it on.
