Lives of 30 surviving beluga whales now in limbo at shuttered Marineland amusement park in Niagara Falls, Ontario
QUEEN’S PARK – MPP Wayne Gates (Niagara Falls) released the following statement in response to the federal government’s decision to deny Marineland’s request to export 30 beluga whales:
“While I’m relieved these belugas won’t be shipped overseas to China to perform in shows, let’s be clear, this decision doesn’t actually solve the problem.
“These whales have already spent their lives in tanks, and too many have died while governments pointed fingers. They cannot wait any longer.
“The province has to step up. Premier Ford keeps saying he’s ‘disappointed’ by this decision, but words aren’t enough. Ontario should be working with the federal government, animal welfare experts, and advocates to get these belugas into proper facilities where their health and well-being come first.

“At the same time, families here in Niagara need to know what comes next. Marineland can and should be repurposed without animals, so that we protect good local jobs and give workers certainty about the future.
“I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again… there is no time to waste. These whales have suffered enough, and Niagara workers deserve answers. It’s time for action, not more delays.”
