“Ontario workers have the skills, experience, and dedication to build the Garden City Skyway to the highest standards. This project must be built by Canadian workers, with Canadian steel, as a clean commitment to good jobs and fair opportunities.”
A News Release from Ontario’s NDP Official Opposition Party

The Garden City Skyway, as it looks taking traffic over the Welland Canal today.
(A Brief Foreword from Doug Draper at Niagara At Large – If the Ford government barges ahead with plans to twin the Garden City Skyway crossing the Welland Canal in St. Catharines, then by all means use Canadian steel and Canadian workers.
But rather than build a twin bridge to accommodate more car and truck traffic at a time when we should be moving to more public transit, why not use the however many billions of dollars that would cost on building a new hospital for the southern end of Niagara, building affordable housing and shifting to more renewable energy. We could use Canadian building materials and Canadian workers for those projects too.)
QUEEN’S PARK — Ontario NDP and Official Opposition leader Marit Stiles is calling on the Ford government to ensure the Garden City Skyway bridge project is built with Canadian steel and Canadian fabricators.
With the details for the contract still on the table, the Ontario NDP is demanding that Ford make sure public money goes to Ontario workers and Canadian-made steel.
“People in Ontario should be able to trust that when their tax dollars go into a big project like this, the jobs and the benefits stay here. This is about standing up for workers and our economy. Doug Ford needs to commit that the Garden City Skyway will be built with Canadian steel.”
Unions and industry leaders, including the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction and United Steelworkers, have long pushed for Canadian steel on public projects.
“Ontario has the workers, the steel, and the expertise to deliver this project on time and to the highest standard, so why hand it over to foreign-owned firms? This project is a significant investment in Niagara and Ontario’s infrastructure. It must be built with Canadian steel to protect jobs here at home and deliver the best value for taxpayers.”

Niagara Falls NDP MPP Wayne Gates and St. Catharines NDP MPP Jennie Stevens
Local Niagara MPPs Wayne Gates (Niagara Falls), Jennie Stevens (St. Catharines), and Jeff Burch (Niagara Centre) are joining Stiles’ call to make this commitment and invest in Niagara and Ontario’s future.
The Ontario NDP is calling for a clear commitment in the final Garden City Skyway contract to require Canadian steel and Canadian fabrication. Ontarians deserve to know it’s being built to the highest standards while supporting good, local jobs.
