Niagara Regional Council Members Critical Of Loan To NPCA Are Being Short Sighted

A Comment from Niagara resident and citizen activist and conservationist John Bacher

It was a great delight recently to learn that the increase surge in Canadian visitors has caused the revenues of the Niagara Parks Commission to increase, despite a decline in American tourists to our region.

This, however, makes more vexing, the hostility of some Regional Council members to making a loan for repairs to the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority’s (NPCA) s interpretive facility at Balls Falls.

It is surprising that the nature interpretive facilities in Niagara are unknown to much of our community. I discovered this a few years ago during a Zoom meeting with environmentally concerned residents of south Niagara Falls.

They were unaware of the excellent nature center operated by the Niagara Parks Commission at the entrance to the ancient old growth forest called the Niagara Glen.

Having our own residents visit and appreciate and spend money visiting nature sites Balls Falls and the Niagara Glen is a good strategy for economic development.

Critics of the loan to the NPCA are short sighted.
