Save Ontario’s Wetlands From Ford’s Sprawl Agenda!

We’ve already lost 72 per cent of our wetlands. Under Ontario Premier Doug Ford & his Conservatives, things are only getting worse.

A Call-Out from the Green Party of Ontario

Posted August 26th, 2025 on Niagara At Large

Ontario’s wetlands store 29 billion tonnes of carbon. They provide critical habitat for 20% of our species at risk, protect our communities from flooding, clean our water and deliver over $50 billion in ecosystem services annually in southern Ontario alone.

We’ve already lost 72% of our wetlands. Under Doug Ford, things are only getting worse. [Protect Ontario’s wetlands](https://secure.gpo.ca/civicrm/mailing/url?u=214006&qid=127384387Ford’s sprawl agenda is paving over these vital ecosystems. Highway 413 alone could impact as many as 75 wetlands.

He gutted the Ontario Wetland Evaluation System (OWES), weakened Conservation Authorities, and with Bill 5, he’s putting even more wetlands at risk by eliminating Environmental Assessments in so-called “special economic zones.”

This reckless approach puts our environment, our communities and our future at risk. That’s why Ontario Greens are calling on the Ford government to:

  • – Reverse changes to OWES and the Conservation Authorities Act- Reinstate and implement Ontario’s 2017–2030 Wetland Conservation Strategy
  • – Uphold the Great Lakes Protection Act- Commit to restoring already degraded wetlands We’re standing up for Ontario’s wetlands but we need your help to keep fighting.

[Join us in speaking out and pushing back against the ongoing destruction of wetlands for needless sprawl.](https://secure.gpo.ca/civicrm/mailing/url?u=214006&qid=127384387)

  • Sincerely, Stephanie Leblanc, Political Mobilizer, Ontario Greens
