Environmental Defence to Celebrate 9th Annual “We are Lake Erie” Day on August 28th

An Invite to Everyone Who Loves and Cares About Lake Erie from Environmental Defence, a citizens advocacy group for protecting and preserving our natural heritage

After decades of being plagued with severe, toxic algal blooms, Lake Erie is showing small signs of recovery. Residents of Ontario are responding to a call for action on social media to raise awareness and urge governments to take necessary action to ensure the health of Lake Erie continues to improve.

August 28, 2025 is the 9th annual #WeAreLakeErie Day – a virtual event to highlight people’s love for the lake. Throughout the day, social media users will share their Lake Erie stories and photos online using the hashtag #WeAreLakeErie or tagging @envirodefence to help create a virtual wave of support for the lake.

The event is a chance to show key decision-makers the important role Lake Erie plays in the lives of so many people.

Earlier this summer, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced its 2025 Lake Erie algal bloom forecast  – https://coastalscience.noaa.gov/multimedia/noaas-first-2025-lake-erie-hab-early-season-projection/

This summer’s prediction indicates a mild-moderate bloom, partly because less nutrient pollution is entering the lake – something worth celebrating.

Although this is good news, the fight to save Lake Erie isn’t over. This progress could be washed away unless our governments prioritize the health of Lake Erie by doing more to reduce nutrient pollution from agricultural and urban sources.
