Right now, thousands of Canadians are under evacuation orders or fire bans. Newfoundland is facing the worst wildfires we’ve seen there. In B.C., wildfires have cut off towns and knocked out power. In P.E.I., temperatures hit levels not seen in decades, while Ontario and Quebec sweltered through dangerous heat waves.
We know what’s driving this. And we know it will only get worse unless governments stop propping up the fossil fuel industry and start acting like the emergency is real.
But here’s the hard truth.
Climate action has been pushed down on the government’s list of priorities. Not because the crisis is any less urgent, but because Donald Trump’s return to the White House has thrown global politics and trade into turmoil. His administration is tearing up climate agreements, boosting coal, oil, and gas, and weaponizing tariffs against trading partners.
In Ottawa, instead of using this moment to double down on climate resilience and energy transition, the Carney Liberals are bending toward fossil fuel expansion that will lock Canada into more pollution and greater climate risk for decades to come.
That might buy short-term political cover, but it will leave Canadians even more exposed to floods, fires, and heat waves. Every year of delay means higher costs, greater losses, and fewer options for the communities that will be hit hardest.
Greens will not be silent. We will keep fighting for the safety of our families and communities.We will keep fighting for the action on climate that this moment demands. But we can only do that with your support.
