“Residents should recognize these actions as band-aid solutions to serious health care deficiencies that could be construed as an effort by Niagara Health to socialize our communities to the eventual planned removal of the UCCs from Fort Erie and Port Colborne.” – Wayne Redekop, Mayor of the Town of Fort Erie

FORT ERIE, Ontario — The Town of Fort Erie acknowledges Niagara Health’s recent efforts to partially reinstate hours of operation at the Urgent Care Centres (UCCs) in Fort Erie and Port Colborne on select dates previously marked for closure, including the July 1 and Labour Day weekend holidays.

While these restored dates are appreciated, both communities remain without urgent care services for approximately a dozen days each during the peak of the summer season, when the need for health care is most critical due to increased tourism activity.
The Town commends Bridges Community Health Centre’s commitment, which has stepped forward to offer primary care services on days when the UCCs are closed.
However, primary care cannot replace urgent care. Relying on Bridges to fill these gaps places additional strain on an already stretched system and is not a sustainable or sufficient alternative.
We extend our sincere appreciation to the dedicated physicians, nurses, and support staff who continue to deliver high-quality care to our residents.
“Residents should recognize these actions as band-aid solutions to serious health care deficiencies that could be construed as an effort by Niagara Health to socialize our communities to the eventual planned removal of the UCCs from Fort Erie and Port Colborne.
“Without a coordinated effort to recruit more physicians for the emergency departments and urgent care centres in Niagara and a long-term vision that benefits all residents, these are only partial solutions to what ails Niagara Health and should not be considered acceptable.” – Fort Erie Mayor Mayor Redekop
