Many progressive voters hoped that Mark Carney would respect the fact that it was their support, not a surge in Liberal enthusiasm, that put him in office. But C-5 makes clear who this government is listening to: the same corporate interests that have always had the ear of both red and blue.
This is what happens under First Past the Post. When parties know they can win power with far less than 50 percent of the vote, they don’t have to listen to you. And they certainly don’t have to govern like they earned your trust.
While Greens, Indigenous leaders, environmental organizations, and legal experts sounded the alarm on C-5, the Liberals and Conservatives closed ranks. They rushed through a bill that makes it easier to ignore public input and harm the environment. Then they laughed. And they toasted.
When governments use moments of crisis (like the one we’re in right now) to bulldoze through laws that put corporate interests first, it’s not democracy, it’s disaster capitalism. First Past the Post allows the old parties to keep doing this to us.
This summer, while Parliament is on recess, we are taking the fight for electoral reform directly to communities across Canada. As part of our broader “Building Canada” initiative, we will be organizing locally, connecting with voters, and building support for a fair voting system.
