“These companies have no intention of using their record profits to cut (carbon) emissions and they’re not serious about climate action.”
A Statement from Canadians for Tax Fairness (C4TF), a non-profit, non-partisan organization that advocates for fair and progressive tax policies, aimed at building a strong and sustainable economy, reducing inequalities, and funding quality public services

Wildfires are raging across the Prairies. Families are evacuating, communities are choking on smoke, and emergency services are stretched thin.
Meanwhile, Canada’s oil and gas CEOs, whose industry is fueling this crisis, are sitting on record profits and raking in billions in tax breaks. As we revealed last year, [from 2010 to 2022, the oil and gas sector received $248 billion in federal and provincial tax deductions, plus $16.6 billion in refundable tax credits](https://www.taxfairness.ca/civicrm/mailing/url?u=7393&qid=2006759).
That’s money that should be fighting the climate crisis, not worsening it.
Instead of demanding accountability, Canada’s new Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson, seems to be giving oil sands giants exactly what they want.
These companies have no intention of using their record profits to cut emissions and they’re not serious about climate action.
Ending tax breaks and subsidies for fossil fuels is critical to ensuring public-led investment into renewables and green infrastructure.
