To All Those Climate Deniers Out There – Is It Hot Enough For You?

“When heat comes, it’s invisible. It doesn’t bend tree branches or blow hair across your face to let you know it’s arrived…. The sun feels like the barrel of a gun pointed at you.”                                        – Jeff Goodell, author of the 2023 best-selling book ‘The Heat Will Kill You First’

Posted by Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug Draper on June 6th, 2025, a day that is breaking records for extreme heat and humidity

New York Times best-selling journalist Jeff Goodell presents a “masterful, bracing” (David Wallace-Wells) examination of the impact that temperature rise will have on our lives and on our planet, offering a vital new perspective on where we are headed, how we can prepare, and what is at stake if we fail to act.

A “dangerous heat warning” from Environment Canada, dated June 23rd, 2025 – “The first significant heat event of the season with dangerously hot and humid conditions is expected to continue into the week.”

From a 1959 – yes that is 1959 as in 66 YEARS AGO! – address to members of the oil and gas industry by American physicist Edward Teller – The presence of more carbon in the atmosphere from the burning of fossil fuels “causes a greenhouse effect (alias climate change). … Significant temperature changes are almost certain to occur by the year 2000, and these could bring about climatic changes. there seems to be no doubt that the potential damage to our environment could be severe.”

A Footnote from Doug Draper at Niagara At Large – Earlier on this blistering hot day, I had to go out to a few stores to pick up a few thing I needed and, as always, it seemed like every second or third vehicle in the parking lots was one of those jumbo-size, gas-guzzling pickup trucks or SUVs. For the sake of ourselves and future generations, when in hell are we going to start taking the climate crisis we are in seriously enough to take action?

And when are enough of our politicians going to take what scientists around the world are calling an “existential threat to our survival” seriously?
