PORT COLBORNE – Today’s announcement from Niagara Health that urgent care centres in Fort Erie and Port Colborne will close one day a week and on certain holidays is devastating news for our community—especially with the busy summer season about to begin.

Make no mistake: this is a direct consequence of consecutive provincial governments’ neglect of Ontario’s healthcare system.

The Ford government has failed to address the growing physician shortage, disrespected frontline workers, and ignored repeated calls for investment. Now, residents in Fort Erie and Port Colborne will be left without access to critical healthcare services on certain days.

You deserve to see a doctor when you need one and to receive care close to home. The Ontario NDP is calling for an increase in residency spots in medical schools, targeted recruitment and retention incentives for doctors, and the removal of barriers preventing thousands of internationally trained, ready-to-practice doctors in Ontario from joining the healthcare workforce.
