Ford’s Bill 5 Threatens Our Wild Species And Wild Spaces. Will You Step Up?

An Urgent Call-Out from Ontario Nature, a non-profit citizens organization advocating for the protection and preservation of our natural heritage

Posted May 29th, 2025 on Niagara At Large

Our natural areas and biodiversity are under attack — again.

(The Ford government’s) Bill 5 is poised to further erode the already-weakened protections for Ontario’s natural areas, including wetlands. This is part of a troubling pattern — one where nature continues to lose ground.

The already weakened Endangered Species Act will be revoked under Bill 5, threatening vulnerable plants and animals many of whom depend on wetlands.

‘Special Economic Zones’ create lawless areas where all remaining protections can be removed, putting our remaining wetlands more at risk.

Rich in biodiversity, wetlands mitigate flooding, clean our drinking water and increase our resilience to the impacts of climate change. Losing wetlands means losing all those benefits.

In southern Ontario, we’ve lost more than 70% of our original wetlands. And 20% of Ontario’s species at risk—including all eight native species of turtle—depend on wetlands for their survival.

We can’t afford to stand by.
