“The old relationship we had with the United States, based on deepening integration of our economies and tight security and military cooperation, is over.” – Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney, March 27th, 2025

He’s like the mean kid in the school yard who can’t stand anyone else having a good time. He’s just got to say or do something nasty or even threatening to try to spoil it.
So there was U.S. President Donald Trump – wasting no time after King Charles of England wrapped up what many Canadians reportedly viewed as a successful visit to our country, complete with a Speech from The Throne that, among other things, celebrated Canada’s sovereignty and special place as a democracy in the world – spewing more venom about making Canada “a 51st state.”
As if the so-called “leader of the free world” doesn’t have anything better to do (starting with keeping his pre-election promise to get the price of eggs down) Trump took to social media this May 27th and wrote that he would let Canada get away with paying nothing for some half-baked “Golden Dome” missile defense system he is dreaming of building at a cost of tens-of-billions of dollars in the skies over North American if Canada becomes “our cherished 51st state.”

Trump’s repeated dream of making Canada a 51st state of the United States
Close watchers of Trump in his own country have warned that if he repeatedly threatens to do something or make something happen through some nefarious means, it is best to take him seriously.
Our Prime Minister has recently said: President Trump wants to break us so he can own us,” to which he added: “We will never let that happen.”
With that in mind, as many of us on our side of the border as possible should join in pressing Mark Carney and his government to work as quickly as possible to break down trade barriers inside our own country in ways that strengthen our independence as an economic powerhouse and to build on trade relations with the European Union and other more friendly and reliable regions of the world.
As individual Canadians, let’s also continue to stand together for our country by buying as many products made in our own country as we possibly can and by boycotting products from and taking trips to the United States.
Trump has shown again that Carney was right when he said our old relationship with the United States is over.
It is becoming clearer and clearer all that time that we will all be better off when we never have to rely on the United States or relate to it in any way around trade or destination for travel again.
