Niagara Falls NDP MPP Wayne Gates continues the fight for Urgent Care Centres in South Niagara to be open 24/7
QUEENS PARK — MPP Wayne Gates (Niagara Falls) is demanding the Ford government restore full urgent care services at Douglas Memorial Urgent Care in Fort Erie, as part of an Ontario NDP motion that would force the government to classify hospital infrastructure as essential projects in the 2025 provincial budget.
“Enough is enough. Fort Erie families deserve to know that help is close by when they need it — not 30 minutes down the highway,” said Gates.
“The people of Fort Erie pay their taxes like everybody else, and they deserve the same quality healthcare. Not cuts to healthcare services. Not excuses. Real investments, real services, right here at Douglas Memorial.”
The motion—introduced by the Official Opposition at Queen’s Park—calls for long-overdue investments in hospitals across the province, including restoring 24/7 emergency and urgent care at Fort Erie’s Douglas Memorial, which has seen its services cut and scaled back under the Ford government’s watch.
“The Premier keeps saying everything’s fine — but ask any senior or any family in Fort Erie how they feel when they are sick after 8 p.m. and there’s nowhere to go. Ontario must start making hospitals and urgent care centres a top priority. I won’t stop fighting for this community. Reopen Douglas Memorial — no more excuses,” said Gates.
Ontario has the lowest health spending per capita in Canada. This spending includes public health services, as well as spending on hospitals, outpatient services, and medical products and equipment
