“We have every advantage over the U.S.—publicly funded health care and education, a skilled workforce, high productivity, and a low dollar. “There is no excuse to let equipment be stripped from our (auto) plants (in St. Catharines and elsewhere across Ontario) and sent across the border”                                            – Wayne Gates, NDP MPP for a Riding of Niagara Falls that includes Niagara-on-the-Lake and Fort Erie

Niagara Falls, Ontario – With thousands of jobs on the line across Ontario’s auto sector, MPP Wayne Gates (Niagara Falls) is calling on Premier Doug Ford to take immediate and decisive action to protect Ontario workers from layoffs caused by the ongoing trade war and lack of provincial leadership.

“Let me be clear – the auto sector is in crisis due to Trump’s trade war and the Premier’s lack of urgency,” said Gates in Question Period at Queen’s Park.

“Auto workers from Oshawa, Windsor, St. Catharines, Ingersoll, and Brampton are facing devastating layoffs—750 in Oshawa alone and 4,000 in Windsor. This is our industry, and these are our jobs. If auto companies want to sell their vehicles in Canada, they need to build them here too.”

Gates criticized the Premier for failing to act during past auto industry crises, citing that it was workers and their unions—not the government—who fought to keep jobs in Oshawa five years ago.

“We have every advantage over the U.S.—publicly funded health care and education, a skilled workforce, high productivity, and a low dollar. There is no excuse to let equipment be stripped from our plants and sent across the border,” Gates said. “This government must stop sitting on its hands. Stand with the workers. Demand that if companies are going to sell here, they must build here,” Gates said.

On April 26th MPP Gates joined thousands at Unifor’s “Keep It Made in Canada” rally in Windsor. Gates travelled from Niagara to Windsor alongside local auto workers to show that this fight stretches from border to border—and that it’s time the Premier showed up, too.
