West Harbour GO Station Upgrades Will Save Riders Over Fifteen Minutes per Roundtrip

HAMILTON – As part of its plan to deliver faster and more reliable GO service across the Greater Golden Horseshoe, the Ontario government has completed construction at West Harbour GO Station, including a recent upgrade that will save more than 250,000 commuters from Niagara over fifteen minutes per roundtrip.
“These completed upgrades at West Harbour GO Station will save Niagara commuters more than an hour per week and opens the way for additional service as the province moves ahead with the Grimsby GO Station,” said Sam Oosterhoff, MPP for Niagara West.
“As our government makes record investments in transit across the province, we are providing commuters in Niagara with easier access to fast, reliable and affordable public transit.”
“As we work to expand GO Service across the region, the completion of West Harbour Station means faster, more convenient and more frequent GO train options with four times as many trips for commuters travelling between Hamilton and Niagara Falls,” said Hon. Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation.
“Our government is making historic investments to expand transit and build for the future, while creating good paying jobs that protect Ontario workers during this time of economic uncertainty.”
West Harbour GO Station previously had a dead-end rail track that required trains to back into and out of the station.
With the station now connected to the main Lakeshore West Line, St. Catharines and Niagara Falls customers can expect faster service in and out of West Harbour GO Station. In addition, all trains travelling to and from Niagara Falls, including weekend and off-peak trips, will now stop at West Harbour GO Station, significantly improving convenience and travel options between the Niagara and Hamilton.
“We are excited to announce that Niagara GO service is expanding, and soon, all Niagara trains will stop at West Harbour GO Station,” said Michael Lindsay, Interim President and CEO of Metrolinx.
“This means customers traveling between Niagara and Hamilton to Toronto will have even more trips to choose from, offering riders more flexibility and convenience. Working alongside the province and CN, we are providing more choice for our customers and year-round access to popular destinations between Niagara and Toronto.”
The completed work on the West Harbour track will also facilitate GO rail service to the future Confederation GO Station in East Hamilton, further connecting GO rail to bus services and Hamilton Street Railway services and making life more convenient for commuters in Hamilton and for those travelling to Niagara.
The Lakeshore West Line schedule will be adjusted in the coming weeks, once testing of the new track is complete.

It’s good this station is finally complete — sadly years over the promised date. I don’t think too many from Niagara will be driving to the Station to get to Toronto. With it being so close to Downtown Hamilton, it would make more sense for people to keep carrying on to Burlington.
That’s why the Grimsby GO Station is so important! Let’s hope the government fulfills that promise soon — even though it was promised to be open in 2021!
