The grand opening of the great Expo ’67 park in Montreal, visited by millions across the country and around the world during Canada’s 100th anniversary of confederation.
As much of a danger Trump poses to Canada and the rest of the free, democratic world, the one good thing he has done is unite us as a country, with a pride and a strength of collective purpose that I haven’t seen since I was a wee little kid during Canada’s 100th anniversary celebrations in 1967.
Growing numbers of us are going to grocery stores and other retail outlets to purchase ever possible Made In Canada product that we can or at least buy products from other friendly countries, which the United States is no more.
Our politically leaders are now finally working to break down trade barriers between provinces and territories that every economist who is asked says would make the economy of our country much strong and far less dependent on the United States, and they are also working to build stronger trading partnerships with countries in Europe and other regions of the world that, unlike Trump’s America, we can count on to work reliably with.
Last but not least, I haven’t seen this many Canadian flags flying from trucks and cars, from the front doors of homes and businesses and from entrances to manufacturing plants and shopping malls for about as long as I can remember.
Finally, we have taken our Canadian flag back from all the anti-vaxxers, climate deniers and other Trump-like characters who have hijacked it in recent years.
For that, and that alone, we owe some thanks to Trump.
