News from the Government of Ontario
March 28th, 2025 on Niagara At Large
A Brief Foreword by Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug Draper – Once again, here is the annual list of public sector workers making over $100,000 a year.
As you review this list, if you have the stomach to, you might find it heartening to know that at a time when so many people are struggling to pay their renit, their property taxes and put food on their tables, and when homelessness and lineups at food banks have grown to crisis proportions, that there are others who are doing so fine on our dime.
Now here is the News Release from the Government of Ontario, followed by a link to the list.
You can also find out about salaries in your region by going on Google or whatever other search engine you may loose and keying in ‘salary disclosure’ followed by the name of public sector party (i.e. – Niagara Health, Niagara Regional Police Service, Regional Municipality of Niagara, the name of a local municipality, etc.) that you wish to review.
TORONTO — Caroline Mulroney, Ontario’s President of the Treasury Board, issued the following statement:
“Today (this March 28th, 2025) , the Ontario government released the salaries of Ontario Public Service and broader public sector employees who were paid $100,000 or more in 2024.
“Compensation in sectors that saw the largest year-over-year increases can be attributed to across-the-board salary adjustments, retroactive payments made in the 2024 calendar year and the most recent collective bargaining outcomes.
“Nearly half of the growth on the list was driven by the school board sector, with teachers contributing to 87 per cent of this increase.
“The /Public Sector Salary Disclosure Act, 1996/ requires organizations that receive public funding from the Province of Ontario to make public, by March 31 each year, the names, positions, salaries and total taxable benefits of employees paid $100,000 or more in the previous calendar year.
The Act applies to the provincial government, Crown agencies and corporations, Ontario Power Generation and subsidiaries, publicly funded organizations such as hospitals, municipalities, school boards, universities and colleges, and not- for-profit organizations that receive $1 million or more, or receive between $120,000 and $1 million if the provincial government funding they receive is 10 per cent or more of their gross revenues.

I see that once again the public shaming referred to as the “Sunshine List” is being published. A list, almost 30 years old, that has never taken into account the rate of inflation over those almost 30 years. If adjusted for the rate of inflation the list would be adjusted to $175,368.00. It’s intended purpose, transparency about the highest earners on the public payroll, has been rendered ineffective due to the government’s refusal to adjust the index to the rate of inflation. In light of normal pay increases, the rate of inflation and the government’s refusal to acknowledge these issues this list will only increase. Unfortunately so will the increase of unwarranted complaints about “outrageous wages”.
