A Commentary by Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug Draper

Anyone across our Canada who has been paying attention, knew it would soon be coming, and HERE WE ARE!
As of this March 23th, a federal election is on and for the moment, I am hoping for just a few important things from all of us, with more to come later.
First, I am hoping that slightly less than one month after a provincial election in Ontario ended this past February 27th, we do not tune out due to election fatigue.
Why? Because as some of our political leaders and political analysts have already stressed – with the continued threats to our economic well-being and to the very sovereignty of our country from Trump to the south, this is one of the most consequential elections in Canadian history.
Who we elect to stand up to Trump and to take our country in directions that are less dependent on trade with the United States will make all the difference in the world.
And finally for now, please do everything you can to keep informed of the issues at stake and the records with record to what they have already done and what they are promising to of the leaders of all federal leaders and parties running in this election. And on April 28th or on whatever dates are set for advance polling in your area, make it your business as a citizens of one of the most free and democratic countries in the world to GO OUT AND VOTE!
We Canadians have already demonstrated a good deal of pride and support for our country over the past two or three months by taking whatever individual actions we can to respond to Trump’s threats by buying Canadian and boycotting made in the U.S.A. and by holding our flag high.
That is great. But what better way now to send a strong message to Trump than by showing up in droves on voting day to give whatever party is elected to govern our country and work as a team with provincial and territorial leaders across Canada the strongest mandate possible.
The last thing we should want Trump and the rest of the world to see now are turnouts like we have had in the recent provincial election and past municipal election where less than half of those eligible to vote bothered to go to the polls.
Let’s make a promise to each other that we will not let that happen.
