The Beatles’ first live appearance on North American television, February, 1964

It was 61 years ago this February 7th that The Beatles first landed North America soil.

Two days later, on February 9th, 1964, they gave their first performance on this continent on the well-watched Ed Sullivan Show before an audience of more than 70 million viewers  – the largest number of people, according to many reports, who tuned into any single television broadcast up to that time.

The rest, as they say, is musical history, sparked by a group that, remarkably, is still drawing young fans today.

One of the songs they performed that was big at the time was a rocker called ‘Twist & Shout’. Here it is, performed three months earlier at a ‘Royal Command Performance’ at The Prince of Wales Theatre in London, England where ‘Beatlemania’ was already on fire. In the audience that nigh, believe it or not, were, Queen Elizabeth II, The Queen Mother and Princess Margaret.
