Niagara Falls MPP Wayne Gates wants to make sure that these LCBO shelves, now empty of U.S.-made alcoholic beverages are quickly re-stocked with Ontario-made beverages

NIAGARA FALLS, Ontario – New Democrat Wayne Gates, who has represented the riding of Niagara Falls since 2014, is calling on the LCBO to restock its shelves with made-in-Ontario wines and spirits.

While the LCBO is currently removing American products from its shelves and catalogue in response to the U.S. President Donald Trump’s order to impose tariffs on Canadian  goods, what the retail outlet does with that freed up space is equally important.

“Let’s leave no empty shelves in the LCBO. Ontario’s wine industry produces some of the best wines in the world – let’s take this opportunity to showcase Niagara and Ontario,” said Gates.

“Ontario wineries have long been fighting an uphill battle for fair shelf space, with imported wines often getting better treatment. With American brands being pulled, the province has a golden opportunity to promote our local wines and spirits,” added Gates.

“People want to buy local, plain and simple,” said Gates.

“Making sure Ontario wines take up shelf space isn’t just the right thing to do—it’s awin for workers, for small businesses, and it gives another tool for folks that want to fight back on the tariffs by buying local”

Gates has a long history of working with winemakers to champion local wines.

In 2023, Gates re-introduced legislation to eliminate the basic 6.1% tax on winery retail stores. The province later adopted Gates’ position, a move he had championed since 2018.
