A Foreword by Doug Draper at Niagara At Large – Well here come those 200 buck cheques, just in time for Premier Doug Ford to call a snap provincial election.
Ford’s old friend and mentor Mike Harris used this same ‘give-the-little-people-a-few-bucks-of-their-money-back gimmick when he was premier a couple of decades ago and when I openly expressed criticism about at it a public forum then, someone in the audience held up their cheque with a smile and said; “Well, it’s better than nothing.”
Given that a bank note from the Ford government with 200 dollars stamped on it is better than one stamped with three big zeros, I suppose that is true. And maybe its just enough to buy Ford and company more votes.

A one-time $200 cheque, along with more of Ford’s hot air about making life “more affordable” for everyday people, won’t do a thing to stop the price gouging at the grocery store.
But if you feel the same way I do about these cheques, one positive thing you can do is donate the money to the charity or non-profit public service group of your choice.
Or if you want to pull one off on Ford, donate the 200 bucks to one of the political parties running against him.
No need to feel bad about doing anything like that with the money.
After all, it is not Doug Ford’s. Every single dollar of it – adding up to more than $2 billion that could be spent on health care or other necessary services – came out of our pockets!
Now here is the News Release from the Ford government –

Ontario Premier Doug Ford – This rebate cheque is for you!
Toronto— The Ontario government has begun issuing $200 taxpayer rebates to provincial taxpayers, as well as each of their eligible children, to help address the high cost of the federal carbon tax and high interest rates, with cheques set to reach families over the coming weeks.
“With Ontario families struggling due to the federal carbon tax, high interest rates and global economic uncertainty, our government is stepping up as part of our ongoing work to keep costs down and help families make ends meet,” said Peter Bethlenfalvy, Minister of Finance.
“Our prudent fiscal management means our government is able to provide this critical support for families even as we continue to improve Ontario’s finances and invest in our world-class public services.”
The cheques are being mailed to all Ontario residents who are eligible for the taxpayer rebate.
To qualify for the rebate, you must have been 18 years or older and a resident in Ontario on December 31, 2023, not be bankrupt or incarcerated in 2024, and have filed a 2023 Income Tax and Benefits Return by December 31, 2024.
Families who qualify for the Canada Child Benefit (CCB) payment will also receive a separate cheque totaling $200 for each eligible child under age 18. For example, an eligible family of five with two adults and three children will receive $1,000.
Ontarians can monitor the status of the cheques they are eligible for online.
