Americans Oppose Trump’s Use Of Tariffs To Annex Canada

Trump’s threat to take over Canada by ‘economic force’ is not polling well with most Americans

President-elect Donald Trump may have gone too far and handed Canadians some useful ammunition to battle against his proposed 25 per cent tariff attack, a new poll suggests.

Trump’s recent pitch to use tariffs as “economic force” to annex Canada appears to be a misfire with his own supporters, who don’t want that, according to the survey by Angus Reid released on January 14th, 2025.

Among 2024 Trump voters, 76 per cent disagreed with using economic or military force to annex Canada, the survey shows. Just nine percent of Trump supporters favoured economic force to annex Canada; only two per cent favoured use of military force. Eleven per cent didn’t know or couldn’t say.

Collapsing distinction between tariffs and “economic force” could help Canada

Trump has explicitly linked his tariff plan with his goal of annexing Canada through “economic force,” adding further dimensions to his tariff plan.

Given that Americans oppose using economic force against Canada, increasing Americans’ perception that the forced annexation of Canada is the objective of Trump’s tariffs could lower American voter support for tariffs on Canada.

Accordingly, telling U.S. audiences that Trump’s annexation plan is unwanted by the vast majority of Canadians, and a decision overwhelmingly respected by Americans, could help persuade Americans the tariffs should be called off.

Dramatically different views of each others’ countries

Canadians have some additional leverage over Trump because of Americans’ strongly favourable feelings towards Canada.

That goodwill to Canada may buttress arguments that Trump’s tariff plan to force Canada into annexation should be cancelled.

Delivering that message through well-liked Canadians like Ryan Reynolds, Celine Dion or Jim Carrey could be effective. Jordan Peterson or Kevin O’Leary are probably not great ambassadors. In fact, probably horrible.

Among Americans, 31 per cent have a very favourable view of Canada and a further 46 have a generally favourable view (77 per cent total).

But that positive view is not reciprocated by Canadians, only seven per cent of whom have a very positive view of the United States while 32 per cent have a generally favourable view (39 per cent total).

At 56 per cent negative, Canadians’ view the United States more negatively than the U.K. (17 per cent negative), Mexico (31 per cent) or Ukraine (21 per cent) but less negatively than Indian (64 per cent negative) or China (75 per cent).
