“There must be lights burning brighter somewhere
Got to be birds flying higher in a sky more blue
If I can dream of a better land
Where all my brothers walk hand in hand
Tell me why, oh why, oh why can’t my dream come true.”
From a 1968 song written for Elvis Presley by Walter Earl Brown
It is hard to imagine a 90-year-old Elvis Presley.
Forever known as ‘The King of Rock & Roll’, he was born on January 8th, 1935. And to borrow a few words from a Bob Dylan song, Elvis, who died on August 16th, 1977 at age 42 from an apparent drug overdose, will always remain “forever young.”
In 1968, at the end of a television show that rekindled his career and became known around the world as his ‘comeback special’, Elvis Presley introduced a song called ‘If I Can Dream’ which, in the dark and divisive times we are living in now, shares a a message that we need more than ever.
