Outgoing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau

It was beginning to seem like it was taking forever for this day to come, but within minutes of  this posting, Justin Trudeau – first sworn in as Canada’s Prime Minister in 2015 – will hold a press conference and announce that he is resigning.

The news, first reported by CBC, raises some obvious questions.

Probably first and foremost, who will take over leadership of the federal Liberal Party and will it make any difference coming into an election that will most certainly take place later this year?

And what will federal Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre do now that is his favourite whipping boy is leaving the scene? Will he finally cut with the all of the bullying and schoolyard taunts and actually begin behaving more like a statesman who is fit to be prime minister?

Okay Mr. Poilivre. We’ve heard it adnoseum – “axe the tax.” But what are you going to do to adress climate change and other pressing issues? Where is the beef?

Will we finally see the end of slogans like “Axe the Tax” any hear any real substance out of Poilievre on how he plans to tackle such issues like food costs, growing homelessness and affordable housing, the climate crisis and last but not least, the threats coming from Trump and company across the border?

Then there is the federal NDP. Is there any chance at all that it could gain enough support from Canadian voters who really don’t want to see the likes of Poilievre to become the next prime minister to form the next government?

As the cliché goes, we better fasten our seatbelts folks because we are in for a rocky ride.

We also better all pay attention and inform ourselves so that we can make the best choice for our future, the future of the communities we live in, and for the country.
