The Political Mess In Ottawa Offers Canadians Unique Opportunity to Push For Tax Fairness

Amid the chaos, Canadians demand bold solutions. Here’s how we push for fair taxes.

‘Canadians want leaders who stand up to the wealthy and corporate interests and commit to real, progressive tax reforms that benefit all of us.’

This month’s (December, 2024) political chaos has left many things uncertain. But what remains unchanged are the challenges Canadians face: cost-of-living concerns, worsening housing affordability, and the climate crisis remain top of mind for many of us.

It’s clear now that Canadians are demanding action to address the root causes of inequality, housing unaffordability, and the climate crisis.

Canada has taken steps in the right direction, such as the pandemic profits tax on banks and insurance companies, a partial closure of the capital gains loophole, and other progressive tax measures.

However, much more needs to be done to tackle deeper systemic problems. Policymakers have yet to take bold action to ensure that prosperity is shared equitably, housing is accessible to all, and climate solutions are prioritized.

What Canada needs now are bold, evidence-based progressive measures. Fair tax policies must be part of the solution:

  • – A wealth tax to ensure the wealthiest pay their fair share.
  • – An expanded windfall profits tax targeting corporations that have gained disproportionately during crises.
  • – A super-profits tax to address ongoing unearned corporate windfalls to fund vital public investments.

These measures can generate the revenue needed to build housing people can truly afford, lower the burden of costly tuition, dental care and medications for more people, invest in community-based green economy projects that create local jobs and local ownership. That is what will put Canada’s wheels back on the rails.

Canadians want leaders who stand up to the wealthy and corporate interests and commit to real, progressive reforms that benefit all of us. All parties seeking to form government in 2025 must understand this.

There is now a window of opportunity to push Canada’s policymakers to commit to making the tax system fairer and more progressive. By donating now, you can ensure that our voices are heard!

A pair of generous C4TF supporters are currently matching all one-time donations, up to $11,000. Donation matching runs until December 31st or until the $11,000 match limit is reached.
