Niagara, Ontario – After more than 36 successful years, Niagara Region’s Upper Canada Lodge long-term care home in Niagara-on-the-Lake will officially closed this past Dec. 19, 2024.

This closure follows the construction and opening of the new Gilmore Lodge long-term care home in Fort Erie and the further development of the new Linhaven long-term care home in St. Catharines.

The Upper Canada Lodge facility and property, located at 272 Wellington Street in Niagara-on-the-Lake, is owned by Parks Canada and has been leased by the Region while operating the long-term care home.

Now officially vacating the site, Niagara Region is working with Parks Canada to ensure the building continues to be occupied and used appropriately within the community.

Parks Canada, in collaboration with the Region, recently completed the process to determine a new user for the facility, ensuring continued occupancy at the site.

With the Region’s departure as of Dec. 19, 2024, it will ‘turn the keys’ over to Parks Canada to resume management of the site and to provide any further details about the property, building or future use of the location.

“We’d like to thank Parks Canada for our long-standing agreement that has enabled us to operate our long-term care home to serve our residents for many years.” – Henri Koning, Commissioner Community Services
