Toronto — This past December 12th, 2024, the Alliance for a Liveable Ontario (ALO), a coalition of farmers, environmentalists, housing activists, land use planners, health care providers and community groups, urged the four political party leaders to endorse decisive, immediate action to address the housing crisis.
This comes a few weeks after the ALO released a report card evaluating provincial housing actions.

“Ontarians already know that the Province’s housing actions so far have made the housing crisis worse,” said David Crombie, former Mayor of Toronto and a founder of the ALO. “Today we’re showing political party leaders what they need to do to fix things. People need homes they can afford, now.”
The report, written for party leaders, identifies five action areas, each with recommendations that would help build desperately needed homes people can afford.
The five action areas are:
- Build in the right places — in towns and cities and not on farmland and natural areas.
- Build a wide variety of housing types — not just towers and single family homes but also multi-bedroom units in low- and mid-rise buildings.
- Build smarter and faster.
- Invest in non-market, affordable housing.
- Make housing affordable and part of liveable communities.
“The housing crisis is too important to be used as a political football,” said Crombie. “That’s why we are urging every political party leader to endorse the recommendations in this report.”
The report provides practical, non-partisan, platform-ready actions — solutions based on the collective wisdom of experts, public leaders and people who work in the housing sector.
“We hope every party will endorse our sensible recommendations — letting Ontarians know that they’re serious about solving the housing crisis,” said Franz Hartmann, Coordinator of the ALO.
