Queen’s Park – Today (on December 9th, 2024) during question period, MPP Burch urged the government to address requests from Port Colborne and Welland residents to restore and expand local healthcare services.

The Welland Hospital has been without after-hours emergency surgical services since February 27, 2023. “The people of Welland are calling for a new full-service hospital to replace their aging facility,” Burch said.

“Niagara Health requires a planning grant to begin this process. However, this Minister has refused to respond to our request for a planning grant or the community’s calls to restore emergency surgical services”.

The Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Health again refused to respond.

Port Colborne’s Urgent Care Centre has been operating with reduced hours since July 5, 2023. “Niagara Health announced it will permanently close the centre and is seeking to sell the Port Colborne Hospital, which was paid for by Port Colborne workers and dedicated to Port Colborne veterans of WWII” he continued. MPP Burch has been clear in calling for the restoration of 24 hour services to the Urgent Care Centre.

The Parliamentary Assistant again declined to provide an answer.
