O’ Christmas Tree, O’ Christmas Tree!

With so much of the bad news that barrages us these days, I thought I would end the week by writing up something I hope you find to be a little happier. So here goes –

Nothing says the beginning of the Holiday Season more for millions of people across North America than the opening night lighting of the Christmas Tree in Mid-Town Manhattan, New York’s Rockefeller Centre.

Rejoicing in the magic and splendor of the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree in Mid-Town Manhattan, New York, New York.

I can say, from first-hand experience, that the trees the city lights up each year at this site are a sight to behold. They are enough to make a grown person believe in Santa Clause again, if only for the few magical moments you stand beneath the glow of their 50,000 sparkling lights.

The soon-to-be Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree as
it looked standing in the Town of West Stockbridge, Massachusetts.

This year’s tree, a Norway spruce more than 60 years old and some 30 metres tall, came from West Stockbridge, Massachusetts, a beautiful little town in the Berkshire Hills that my family and I have stopped in many times on our way to visit friends in Cape Cod. As I watched the official light of this tree on my flat screen at home this past Wednesday, November 4th, I wondered how many times I may have walked by it during our family’s visits to the town.

I am sure that  some of you may have mixed feeling about cutting down such a majestic tree for the few weeks it serves as a beacon for the Holiday Season. I have often had mixed feelings about it too.

But in the case of this tree, as in the case of so many others, it was planted by people in the community and this one, in particular, stood in  memory of a beloved person who passed. Having come to know the good people of this region, I am certain that the people in that community, as in others, will be out there next spring, replacing it with planting many more trees like it.

Niagara At Large will be back with more news and commentary this coming Monday, December 10th. In the meantime, I wish you love and peace this weekend. And if you are fortunate enough in your own life to do so, do what you can to support charity groups in your community that collecting toys and food for the less fortunate among us so that they can have a happier Christmas too.
