QUEEN’S PARK – MPP Jennie Stevens (St. Catharines) has introduced a motion calling on the government to ban the installation of paid parking meters at rental housing properties.
“Tenants in my community, and the loved ones who visit them, are being charged extortionate rates for the privilege of parking at their own home,” said Stevens.
“These are people who are already facing soaring rental costs – now they’re being nickel and dimed by big corporate landlords.”
In St. Catharines, the affected properties are home to many seniors who are especially impacted by the unfair fees. These residents may require regular visits from PSWs or family caregivers, providing vital services and much-needed companionship. In some instances, PSWs have refused to provide care to residents with paid visitor parking.
“Seniors deserve better,” added Stevens. “It’s time for the province to take action by bringing these parking fees to an end.”
Background:
* MPP Stevens has tabled Motion 163 (https://www.ola.org/en/legislative-business/status-business/private-members-motions) which aims to end the use of paid parking meters by corporate landlords
* The City of Toronto moved to prohibit paid visitor parking (https://www.torontotenants.org/victory_on_visitor_parking) in multi-residential buildings in 2013. The Local Planning Appeal Tribunal overturned the ban (https://www.omb.gov.on.ca/e-decisions/pl130592-Mar-16-2020.pdf) in 2020
