Ford Grants His Government A Free Pass To Cut New Highway Through Ontario’s Greenbelt

This week, the Ford government just passed Bill 212.

You’ve likely heard about how it gives the Ford government powers to rip up bike lanes, but what’s flying under the radar is that this Bill will fast-track Doug Ford’s sprawl-inducing vanity project Highway 413.

Through this bill, the Ford government has exempted themselves from doing proper due diligence on Highway 413. They’ve decided that they don’t have to do a proper environmental assessment or meaningful consultation with the Indigenous communities whose land will be paved over.

That’s because Highway 413 is an environmental wrecking ball that’s going to pave over 2,000 acres of prime farmland, slice through the Greenbelt, and crank up climate pollution – all to save commuters a mere 30 seconds or less.

Shockingly, Ontario Greens are the only party fighting back against Highway 413. The other opposition party leaders have been hedging on the issue, wishy-washy at best.

Mike Schreiner (Green Party Leader)and the Ontario Greens have been clear: Highway 413 must be cancelled.

Because the Highway 413 route will go through thousands of acres of farmland, this government has also included a section of the bill to allow themselves to expropriate land from people living along the route at whatever price they deem reasonable.

Very soon folks and farmers living along the new route of the 413 will have their land taken from them without the due process that would happen in any other part of the province.
