While most provinces in Canada allow municipalities to charge fossil fuel companies to run fossil gas pipes under public land, in Ontario, fossil giants like Enbridge are getting a free ride on the back of taxpayers.
Enbridge is getting a free ride on the back of taxpayers. You heard that right: at a time when the climate emergency is worsening and people are struggling to make ends meet, Doug Ford is subsidizing fossil fuel giants.
This past November 4th, 2024 at Queen’s Park, Aislinn Clancy and I introduced a bill to make Enbridge and other fossil fuel companies pay their fair share.
Our bill, the No Free Ride for Fossil Fuels Act, would allow municipalities to charge Enbridge and other fossil gas providers for use of public land for their infrastructure. It would mean fossil fuel giants would pay their fair share, and would generate revenue that could be spent on building much-needed housing and making our communities climate-ready.
While climate change continues to devastate homes and communities, putting Ontarians’ health at risk and flooding people’s homes, fossil fuel giants are making record profits. Just last week, Enbridge reported third-quarter profits of $1.3 billion, up from $532 million one year prior.
We’re holding this government to account and asking the Premier to show us where his priorities lie: Is it with everyday Ontarians, or is it with the billionaires at Enbridge?
