Trump Won. The Kamala Harris Joyride For Peace, Togetherness and Democracy Is Over

Is this a nightmare I can’t shake off or did this really happen?

Forgive me if I am still trying to process all of this because it seemed to me, as I imagined it seemed to so many others, that the choice in this race for the U.S. presidency could not have been starker.

It was like a choice between wading into a pool of nice warm, refreshing  water versus jumping into a cauldron of boiling oil.

Obviously, the tens-of- millions of Americans who voted for him to take back one of the most powerful offices in the world did not see it that way. Lest we forget, he told them from the start of his campaign that he was going to be their savior and avenger. Whatever hits he was taking and would continue to take along the way, he told them, he was taking for them.

However much he lied and however much he spewed ignorance and hate and engaged in outrageous and lawless behaviour, there is at least one thing about Trump that cannot be denied in the wake of this election. He has (in all due respect to real reptiles) a reptilian genius for tapping into and channeling the frustration, fear and anger that is out there among so many of his fellow Americans.

It is a frustration, fear and anger that did not just being when Trump rode down that escalator nine years ago to announce his candidacy for president. It is a frustration, fear and anger that has been building for decades with the signing of trans-national trade agreements that cost so many working class jobs, and with the growing wage gap between the rich and super-rich and everyone else.

And on the Canadian side of the border, as we try to come to terms with another Trump presidency, our political leaders at all levels of government should take head because those feelings of frustration, fear and anger are also brewing among many here.

I walked through the parking lot of a small shopping mall in my community of Thorold yesterday and I passed at least three vehicles with ‘F##K Trudeau’ stickers (a sticker and flag that I deplore, by the way) displayed on the windows.

We now face the possibility of elections being called at the federal level and at the provincial level in Ontario in the first half of this coming year and according to polls taken month after month, we may very likely end up with a Prime Minister Pierre Poilievre and his Conservatives in Ottawa and another term of Doug Ford as Premier at Queen’s Park -, all while we are trying to cope with a President Trump across the border.

For those of us who care about issues like climate change, protecting and preserving public health and other needed services, I say; God help us.”

Many others may very well view a Trump, Poilievre, Fort triumvirate as something to celebrate.

With that I think I need to go out now and take a long walk.
